Western Ghats & Backwater Species


Birding and Photography trip to Goa & Dandeli covering the Western Ghats endemics as well as the mangrove and coastal species.


First two days are subject to tide timings and the schedule might be modified to suit the best conditions.

Day 1
Arrival and transfer to hotel in Morjim
PM: Evening birding around Morjim. Birding on Morjim Beach includes walking on the beach or at times during low tide when a sandbar forms in the estuary we might have to travel by boat to the sandbar to watch or photograph the birds.
Brown-headed Gull, Black-headed Gull, Steppe Gull, Caspian Tern, Pallas’s Gull, Slender-billed Gull, Lesser Crested Tern, Greater Crested Tern, Gull-billed Tern, Sanderling, Curlew Sandpiper, Whimbrel, Curlew, Dunlin, Lesser & Greater Sand Plovers, Eurasian Curlew, Grey Plover, Black-eared Kite, Black kite, Brahminy Kite, White-bellied Sea Eagle

Day 2
AM: Morning Birding around Morjim.  Walk on the beach or boat ride to the sandbar.  Post birding we head for Dolphin watch if time permits.  The place is known for the Indo-Pacific Hump-backed Dolphins.  A ride for about an hour can give good sightings of the Dolphins. Return to the hotel for lunch.
PM: Drive to Carambolim Lake and Marshes for waders and waterfowls.  Species covered here include Black-tailed Godwits, Little and Temminck’s Stints, Black-winged Stilts, Pacific Golden Plovers, Common and Spotred Redshanks, Common Greenshanks; Common, Marsh, Green and spotted Spandpipers, Ruffs, River Tern, Whiskered Tern, Osprey, Indian and little cormorants, Common Moorhen, Purple Swamphen, Purple, Grey Herons, Brown Hawk Owl, Jungle Owlet, Glossy and Black-headed Ibis…
Post birding in Carambolim we head back to Morjim.  Stay in Morjim Overnight.

Day 3
AM: Early morning we leave for the Boat Safari in River Zuari for Collared Kingfisher, black-capped Kingfisher, Stork-billed Kingfisher, Greater Crested Tern, Lesser Crested Tern, Slaty-breasted Rail, White-bellied Sea Eagle, Osprey, Peregrine Falcon… Post boat trip we head to close-by Verna Grassland and Scrubland for species like Malabar Lark, Red-headed Bunting, Tree Pipit, Paddyfield Pipit, Rufous-tailed Lark, Some species of harriers, and few other raptors.  Later we head to Nature’s Nest Goa located at a drive of 90 minutes.  Post check in you will be served buffet lunch with veg and non-veg options.
Time here on wards will be spent to cover the Western Ghats and South India endemics as well as other forest species like Malabar Trogon; Malabar Parakeet; Malabar Pied Hornbill; Malabar Grey Hornbill, Malabar Wood-shrike, Malabar White-headed Staring, Malabar Barbet; Nilgiri Flowerpecker, Flame-throated Bulbul, Crimson-backed Sunbird, Grey-headed Bulbul; Blue-eared Kingfisher, Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher, Forest Wagtails, Western Crowned Warbler, Velvet-fronted Nuthatch, Sri Lanka Frogmouth; Jerdon’s Nightjar; Jungle Owlet; Brown Fish Owl; Indian Pitta; Oriental Scops Owl; Greater Racket tailed Drongo; White-rumped Shama and so on.
PM: Evening trail starts at 3.30 pm and will cover the Tambdi Surla area of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary.  We drive through forest with intermittent stops for birding.  A 13th Century temple devoted to Lord Shiva lies at the end of the road.  The stream around is highly productive.  Also the fields and surrounding of villages around are very productive.  The area is good for Blue-eared Kingfisher, Malabar Whistling Thrush, Malabar Barbet, Malabar Parakeet, Brown-breasted Flycatcher, Grey-fronted Green Pigeon, Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Indian Pitta, Mountain Hawk Eagle.
Return to Nature’s Nest Goa and stay overnight.

Day 4
AM: Birding in Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary: This Wildlife Sanctuary is rich in terms of bird life. A mixed deciduous forest with cane breaks surrounded by low-lying plantation areas make a unique habitat here. The sanctuary also has a zoological park.
We will be starting early morning post tea/ coffee and biscuits. The Sanctuary is located 30 minutes straight drive from Nature’s Nest. However we will be stopping on the way birding all along the way with stops at important birding spots. Pack breakfast will be carried in order to save time.
Species we look forward to include Malabar Trogon, Flame-throated Bulbul, White-rumped Shama, Black-naped Monarch, Black-naped Oriole, Brown-breasted Flycatcher, Crested Hawk-eagle, Crested Goshawk, Besra, Asian Fairy Bluebird, Brown Fish Owl, White-cheeked Barbet, White-bellied Blue Flycatcher, Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher, Heart-spotted woodpecker and other species of woodpeckers and so on.
PM: Birding in Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary followed by late evening trail for owls and nightjars around the lodge.

Day 5 
AM: Birding in Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary to cover the remaining species
PM: Birding in Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary to cover additional species

Day 6 
AM: Birding in Nature’s Nest campus and surrounding areas. The campus is one of the best places to click nectar feeding birds like Vernal Hanging-parrot, Spiderhunters and sunbirds. We also have a tower to accommodate 2 people at a time for photography.
Head to Old Magazine House in Ganeshgudi near Dandeli.
PM: Post lunch birding and photography from the hide in Ganeshgudi withing the lodge campus.

Day 7 
AM: Morning Birding and photography in Ganeshgudi
PM: Post lunch the session will be at Dandeli Timber Depot for dust bathing Malabar Pied Hornbills in addition to White-bellied Woodpecker, Yellow-footed Green Pigeon, Chestnut-bellied Nuthatch, Lesser Yellownape

Day 8
AM: Birding in Ganeshgudi till 10 am followed by check out.
Followed by drop to Goa Airport (Lunch en-route). 4 Hours drive to the airport.

PM: Birding in Anshi Wildlife Sanctuary. Evergreen forest where you can spot White-bellied Tree Pie, Lesser Yellownape, Blue-eared Kingfisher and other exclusive forest species.

Day 9
AM: Continue Birding in Anshi Wildlife Sanctuary. Post birding head to Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary

Day 11
Birding in Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary for Wynaad Laughingthrush, Rufous Babbler, Indian Scimitar Babbler, Brown Wood Owl in addition to other forest species and endemics.
